Thank you so much for giving us “bad guys” that are so amazingly nuanced and fleshed out that you can’t help but love them for their own sakes. And not in the way we love Une and Treize (they’re so bad, it’s awesome) but like Zechs and Noin. You’ve given us a relationship that is realistic and supportive and healthy. Even if they’re not romantically linked (
which they totally are), they are caring and supportive of each other because they genuinely care about each other, not because it furthers dastardly plans of evil derring do. Thank you for giving us characters like Zechs who are gallant and chivalrous to ladies without dehumanizing and objectifying them as damsels-in-distress. Thank you for giving us women like Noin who can care deeply about someone, but not have that love be the entire end-all, be-all of their existence. And most of all, thank you for giving us characters that can have the worst day of their life, and still come out of it snarky.
I love you. You are my end-all, be-all.
#THIS WAS SUPER IMPORTANT #because olivers first instinct was what are you wearing #as in what are you doing #oliver wants to protect her #but he doesnt understand that she might NEED to protect herself #sara doesnt judge #sara doesnt say what are you doing this isnt who you are #sara supports her and helps her #without question #she even compares herself to her in a positive way #when felicity is feeling inferior #sara says small people like US #not you US #she understands as a woman and a friend #what it is to become stronger to become confident to need someone #to need to have the belief that you are strong #she had to find this herself #but she wants to help felicity especially seeing as she probs understand she’s part of the problem #UGH SO MANY EMOTIONS BASICALLY
DU NOT SPEAK TO MEH OF DRAGON’S FIYAH
And ain’t that fab? Most TV writers still treat POC characters too seriously or not seriously enough, but our wonderful Abbie lives in a show that operates between those two poles. To be camp, a text must make audiences feel a mix of love and detached amusement, and Abbie is a character human enough to love even if she lives in a hilariously nonsensical universe.
The entire thing is really worth a read. Go check it out!
OMFG someone who gets it! Gets it! It is FUN! Less of the moralizing and woe is me shit! Fun!
Great article. Especially about the magical negro bit. *sighs*
